Giuseppe Mastroviti, Technical Director at A35 Brebemi, has been recognized by ESET as a Hero of Progress for his work in the construction of the “Arena del Futuro” electromobility circuit, a project developed by Aleatica’s team in Italy together with multi-sectoral allies and stakeholders.
ESET is a leading global cybersecurity company and recently they announced its inaugural selection of Heroes of Progress 2022. The list recognizes nine agents of change from around the world who have contributed to technological progress in different industries throughout the year, among which is Giuseppe Mastroviti.
The final selection was made under a rigorous process in which a jury of experts analyzed an exhaustive outline of their work and the impact that it has had.
The entry process required applicants to include details of technologies that they have invented, adopted, or improved, including how this technology has advanced industries, communities or society at large. Subsequently, a panel of experts headed up by ESET’s Chief Business Officer, Ignacio Sbampato, reviewed over 50 shortlisted applications before deciding on the final nine heroes.
At Aleatica we offer smart, safe, and sustainable mobility solutions that positively impact the environment. Part of our focus on innovation is to progressively promote new infrastructure that is energy efficient.
Giuseppe Mastroviti has been a key player in achieving this goal with the “Arena del Futuro”.
Giuseppe Mastroviti: academic background and experience
Giuseppe Mastroviti is an engineer graduated from the Politecnico di Torino, with a master’s degree in construction engineering, received from the École des Ponts ParisTech. He also has a second level university master’s degree in mechanized tunnel excavation, from the Politecnico di Torino.
As a professional, he gained experience in the infrastructure sector at the design, construction and maintenance level. He has coordinated civil and plant engineering projects of national and binational strategic infrastructures (such as the Frejus tunnel), both at Ordinary Maintenance level and as new works or structural adjustments.
As technical director of the concessionaire, Giuseppe Mastroviti supervised the construction of the A35 and was the maintenance and operations manager (O&M contract).
The “Arena del Futuro” project
Giuseppe Mastroviti and multiple other collaborators promoted the materialization of the experimental circuit built on the A35 Brebemi highway, opening doors to the exploration of future strategic, sustainable and innovative infrastructure projects at a global level.
Technology has allowed Aleatica and its collaborators to start a revolution towards the future of electromobility, by making it possible for electric vehicles to recharge their batteries as they drive on the highway. The Arena del Futuro works thanks to DWPT (Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer) technology, which consists of an innovative system of coils placed under the asphalt that transfers energy directly to the vehicles while they drive on exclusive lanes.
For the system to work correctly, it is necessary to achieve the correct interaction between different key elements, such as: asphalt, control units, the cables, electric vehicles and 5G connectivity. This is why it was so important to have specialized collaborators in each field. Giuseppe Mastroviti worked among leading companies and institutions committed to reaching the decarbonization of transportation.
The participants of this project included: ABB, Electreon, IVECO, IVECO BUS, Mapei, Pizzarotti, Politecnico di Milano, Prysmian, Stellantis, TIM, FIAMM Energy Technology, Università Roma Tre, Università di Parma, Vigili del Fuoco and Ministry of the Interior – Polizia Stradale.
Advantages of the induction charging technology
Findings on the use of this induction charging technology (DWPT) demonstrate:
- Greater energy efficiency of vehicles due to the ability to charge on roads;
- A reduction in vehicle battery volume without impacting the load capacity for people and goods;
- An increased average lifespan for batteries due to the fact that charging peaks can be avoided by charging during the day at regular intervals; and
- A better overall quality of travel that optimizes time with the combination of different recharging systems.

In addition to the main charging function, this technology allows information to be exchanged between the vehicle and centralized management platforms, generating data that can increase road safety and travel efficiency while reducing harmful greenhouse gas emissions.
This technology has aroused great interest for commercial development in Italy and abroad because of its versatility, since in addition to being useful on roads and highways, it is also suitable when combined within other infrastructures such as ports, airports and parking lots.
The 2022 Heroes of Progress list has also been shared and celebrated by Forbes through their online site. Some of the heroes recognized have developed innovative projects in the medical, educational or the food industry field, as well as many others that are major technological breakthroughs.
Aleatica wishes to congratulate Giuseppe Mastroviti, for being named a Hero of Progress, as well as our A35 Brebemi team, along with other innovators from different industries who through their work have contributed to solving global problems that help improve people’s lives and the world we live in.
